Over the last eleven years, the Annis Water Resources Institute has taken over 70,000 adults and children on boat tours of Lake Michigan. This year, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is working with the organization on July 26 and 27 to offer Hoosiers the opportunity to learn about a working water quality assessment and research vessel.
The boat tours will take place on the specially designed outreach and research vessel W.G. Jackson. The excursions will help raise awareness about the Lake Michigan Lakewide Management Plan as well as gather information and opinions from area residents. The tour, which includes the opportunity to sample and analyze lake water, is roughly 90 minutes.
"This is a wonderful way for Hoosiers, and especially children, to learn about an important environmental issue," said Bruno Pigott, IDEM assistant commissioner of the Office of Water Quality. "This tour will provide an opportunity for everyone involved to see a real research vessel at work and experience something extraordinary."
Hoosiers interested in participating in the boat tours should call Danielle Barnett at (219) 757-0277. The boat tour is free, but space is limited and reservations are required. Participants must be age nine or older.
