INDIANAPOLIS - The Purdue University Department of Entomology, the Tippecanoe County Public Library, and the Indiana State Library collaborated to create the Catch the Reading Bug video that complements children's summer reading programs in Indiana and nationwide. The freely downloadable 16-minute video takes you to Camp Bookworm, where insect expert Tom Turpin and librarian Jos Holman talk to campers about books and bugs. The video lets summer readers meet a Chilean Rose Tarantula and a giant tropical millipede, learn about great bug books at their public library, and even how to do the Bee Dance.
"The collaborative effort between the State Library, Purdue, and the Tippecanoe County Public Library was very logical; each group brought something unique to the table," said Indiana State Library Children's Services Consultant, Michele Farley. "I am pleased to hear that the video has received such positive feedback and recogniction on a national level."
The video file can be downloaded online (http://in.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=20355). Viewers will witness Hoosier kids daring to hold real creepy crawlers, learn about books like Martina the Beautiful Cockroach and Charlotte's Web, and learn the Bee Dance courtesy of Betty the Bee.
"We made this video as a fun and interactive resource to get summer readers excited about the Catch the Reading Bug summer reading programs," said Farley.
Indiana is one of 46 states that participates in the Collaborative Summer Reading Program (CSLP), which sponsors the Catch the Reading Bug program. The CSLP began in 1987 and is a grassroots consortium of states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children at the lowest cost possible for their public libraries. More information about the CSLP and the Catch the Reading Bug program is available at http://www.cslpreads.org/.
