LaPorte County-A multi-vehicle crash involving twelve semis and fifteen cars closed a portion of I-94 this morning.
Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 7:10 a.m., white out conditions were experienced on I-94 around the 37 mile marker (this is three miles east of the Michigan City/U.S. 421 exit). A multi-vehicle crash occurred blocking all lanes of west bound traffic. At least two semi-trailers were damaged in the crash spilling their contents into the road. It is believed they were hauling general merchandise and concrete fire bricks. Approximately 350 gallons of diesel fuel was also lost and Haz-Mat is on the scene for clean-up. Five people were injured none of these injuries are life threatening. All traffic is being diverted off at the 40 mile marker (this is U.S. 20 in LaPorte County). I-94 west bound, at this location, is expected to be closed until early afternoon for investigation of the crash, clean-up of the roadway, and removal of the vehicles.
The Lowell District has covered approximately 93 crashes, ten personal injuries, seventy-five property damage and eight slide-offs all of these on I-80, I-94 and I-65. The Lowell District covers seven counties, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Newton Jasper, Starke and Pulaski.
