UPDATE: The OUCC and South Haven Sewer Works have reached a settlement agreement in this case, which is still pending before the IURC. For more information, please click here.
Two public events will take place on Wednesday, October 10 regarding the request of South Haven Sewer Works, Inc. for an increase in its rates and charges. Both events will be held at Paul Saylor Elementary School, 331 Midway Dr., Valparaiso, Indiana:
- At 5:30 p.m., local time, the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) will conduct an information meeting to discuss the regulatory process and describe public field hearing procedures.
- At 6:00 p.m., local time, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) will conduct a formal public field hearing to accept oral and written consumer comments. The comments will become part of the evidentiary record considered by the IURC in reaching its final decision in this case. Commissioners are not permitted to answer consumer questions during the formal field hearing.
South Haven - a for-profit entity with approximately 3,700 Porter County customers - is requesting permission to increase its flat monthly residential sewage disposal rate from $64.95 to $71.20. According to its written testimony before the IURC, the utility is seeking the increase to pay for capital improvements - most of which are required under a consent decree with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The OUCC - the state agency representing consumer interests in IURC proceedings - has not yet taken a position in this case but has until October 30 to complete its review and file testimony with the Commission.
The utility's petition and testimony in this case are available for public review at the South Haven Public Library (403 West 700N). The entire public case file is available for review on the IURC Website (www.in.gov/iurc), by visiting http://www.in.gov/iurc/portal/Tab.aspx?tabid=28&dn=SEARCHDOCKETEDCASE and entering docket number 43310.
Consumers who are unable to attend the October 10 events are encouraged to submit written comments to the OUCC. Comments should include the consumer's name, address, and a reference to IURC Cause No. 43110. Consumers can send comments to the OUCC by mail, fax or the Internet:
