UPDATE: The IURC issued an order in this case on Dec. 5, 2007. The 4-page order, available by clicking here, requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and will open in a new window.

The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) is inviting public comments as it reviews Everton Water Corporation's request for an increase in its rates and charges.

The OUCC, the state agency representing consumer interests in cases before the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), has not yet taken a position on the utility's request but is currently scheduled to complete its review and file testimony in this case on Monday, October 22. Consumers who wish to provide written comments on the case in the meantime may submit them to the OUCC's consumer services staff via mail, e-mail or fax.

Everton - a non-profit entity with more than 750 customers in Fayette and Union Counties - is seeking IURC permission to increase its rates to pay for capital improvements and cover higher operating and maintenance costs. Under the utility's proposal, the monthly water bill for a residential customer using 5,000 gallons would increase from $23.98 to $33.79. The utility is also seeking to increase its one-time tap fee for new customers from $710 to $910, implement a new $50.00-per-incident charge for meter tampering, and increase its $25.00 reconnection fee to $50.00 for reconnections made after regular business hours, during weekends and on holidays. Everton's current water rates were approved in 2001.

This case's public file is available for review on the IURC Website (, by visiting and entering docket number 43312.

The OUCC needs to receive all written consumer comments in this case no later than Thursday, October 18. Comments should include the consumer's name, address, and a reference to "IURC Cause No. 43312," and can be submitted by mail, fax or the Internet:

Consumers with questions about submitting written comments can contact the OUCC's consumer services staff toll-free at 1-888-441-2494.

Additional information on the regulatory process and other utility consumer topics - including tips for saving money on water and energy bills - is available on the OUCC Website ( or by calling the agency toll-free.
