2009 RN Renewal Information 2009 RN Renewal Information

Current RN licenses expire on October 31, 2009

Your Registered Nurse license and any affiliated licenses (Limited Licenses to Practice Nurse Midwifery, Prescriptive Authority for Advanced Practice Nurses, and CSRs) are due for renewal by October 31, 2009.  You may now renew these licenses at any time.

Update:  If you have answered "yes" to any of the renewal application questions, the Indiana State Board of Nursing will review your personal statement outlining the circumstances surrounding that "yes" response.  If the Board requires further information or if no statement is received, you will be scheduled to personally appear before the Board and will be notified of the time and location of this required appearance.  Due to the high volume of renewal applications processed by the Board, review of all positive response statements will continue to occur beyond October 31, 2009.  If your license expiration date has not been renewed due to a pending review of your renewal application's positive response, your license status will convert from "active" status to "valid to practice pending review" as of November 1, 2009.  If the Board does not take action on the renewal application within 90 days, it will automatically revert to "active" status.

If you have a tax hold placed against your license, you will not be renewed and your license will expire as of November 1, 2009.  Your license will be restored upon verification from the Department of Revenue that the tax hold has been lifted.

Online Renewal

  • You may renew your license(s) online 24 hrs a day/7 days a week at http://www.pla.in.gov/, paying with your Visa, Discover or Master Card.  To expedite the renewal process, we recommend that you use the online registration renewal service
  • Your login ID will be your license number – your password will be your Social Security Number without spaces or dashes.
  • The renewal fee is $50 for the primary license, $10 for APN Prescriptive Authority and $60 for each CSR renewed.  Additional online processing fees apply.
  • You may update your address, email, & phone numbers during the online renewal process.  For APN Prescriptive Authority renewals or CSR address changes read the important additional information below.
  • The online renewal process takes only minutes to complete and your renewal will be processed and available for verification the next business day.

Pocket Cards

The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency no longer issues pocket license cards at license renewal (with the exception of CSR pocket cards).  If you need to purchase a new pocket card you may do so online only.  Walk-in customers will not be issued pocket cards.  Please note that permanent pocket license cards no longer contain expiration dates, although a card with an expiration date is also available separately online.

Late Fees

If your license expires, you may renew after the October 31, 2009 expiration date, but you will be assessed a $50 late fee for each late renewal -- in addition to the standard renewal fees.  Please be aware that there are no exceptions – if you renew late, you must pay the late renewal fee(s).  If you attempt to renew a license that has been expired for more than 3 years, the Indiana State Board of Nursing will require demonstration of continued professional competence to practice prior to renewal.

Paper Renewal

If you prefer to renew your license by mail, you can complete the RN renewal form and return it to the IPLA at the address provided.  Please make sure all requested information is provided along with the renewal fee; allow 4 to 6 weeks for the processing of your paper renewal.

Important Additional Information Regarding Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriptive Authority

If you are renewing your APN prescriptive authority, you must have a current collaborative practice agreement with an Indiana licensed practitioner.  You do not need to send a copy of this current agreement.  However, if you are selected to participate in a post-renewal audit, you will be required to submit a copy of the agreement and documentation of your continuing education credit from the two years preceding the renewal of your prescriptive authority.

In order to change your Controlled Substance Registration address you must submit the change information by email.  This should be done at least 24 hours prior to renewing online.  Please note that CSR addresses must be an Indiana practice location address.

All prescribers and dispensers are eligible for access to INSPECT, Indiana's prescription monitoring program. If you are a prescriber or dispenser, or work with one, visit www.in.gov/inspect to get registered or obtain information on the program.
