Alternative Power and Energy (APE) Programs:
APE Grant Program
The APE Grant Program will provide cost share grants to Indiana's public, non-profit, and business sectors for the purchase of alternative energy systems that will help offset fossil fuel usage and serve as an educational tool.
Alternative energy systems make use of non-fossil fuel resources to produce clean, home-grown electricity and thermal energy. In a time of rising energy costs and increased energy supply volatility, it is vital to our economic future to diversify the portfolio of resources we use to produce energy.
Alternative energy systems that utilize the following technologies/resources to produce electricity and/or thermal energy are eligible for grant funding:
- Wind Power
- Combined Heat and Power (CHP) for municipal wastewater treatment facilities
- Solar Electricity
- Solar Water Heating (SWH):
- Domestic Hot water
- Radiant Heating
- NOT swimming pools

Energy Project Feasibility Study program
The Indiana Office of Energy & Defense Development (OED) is pleased to offer the Energy Project Feasibility Study Program. The grant program will provide cost share grants to Indiana’s public, non-profit, and business sectors for the production of feasibility studies investigating renewable energy.
Alternative energy systems make use of non-fossil fuel resources to produce clean, home-grown electricity and thermal energy. In a time of rising energy costs and increased energy supply volatility, it is vital to our economic future to diversify the portfolio of resources we use to produce energy.
The purpose of the grant program is to develop technically and economically feasible renewable energy projects. These studies may also serve as a foundation for applications for federal farm bill funding through the USDA Section 9006 program.

Geothermal Residential Rebate Program
Important Note: To be eligible for a rebate, the rebate application must be approved before ANY installation. Previously installed Geothermal Heat Pump systems are NOT eligible for this rebate program.
The Residential Rebate Program will offer Indiana homeowners rebates for the purchase and installation of geothermal heat pumps.The program offers $250,000 in rebates for the installation of geothermal heat pumps (GHP) in existing Indiana residences. GHPs make use of a clean, renewable energy resource (constant temperature of the earth), to reduce home energy consumption and costs for heating, cooling and water heating by 25–50% or more. Furthermore, GHPs are a homegrown energy technology that create and maintain skilled manufacturing and installation jobs in our state.

Bp A+ for Energy Grant Program
The A+ for Energy® program was developed by BP to recognize teachers for innovation and excellence in teaching energy and/or energy conservation in the classroom. Any public or private preK-12 teacher currently teaching in an accredited or licensed school, in one of the eligible program locations, is encouraged to apply. This grant is open to teachers in Lake and Porter Counties in Indiana. Find out more information about this grant opportunity here.
Energy Outreach and Education
Outreach and Education activities undertaken by the OED are targeted to reach audiences in the public, industrial, commercial, agricultural and environmental sectors.
OED will communicate about energy efficiency and renewable energy programs through monthly newsletters, special events, website resources and other forms of media. Information and resources will be made available to schools and teachers for energy education in the classroom.
Energy Policy and Planning
The Office of Energy & Defense Development has been given a directive as the lead policy maker for energy issues in Indiana. Energy's strategic plan, "Hoosier Home-Grown" Energy, outlines the plans and initiatives for the upcoming months and years.
The main focus of the plan is to provide Indiana with the needed megawatts in affordable and environmentally friendly ways.
This involves:
- Clean Coal Technologies
- Renewables
- Efficiency
Industrial Energy Efficiency
OED will continue to work with its partners at Purdue University to provide technical support to Indiana manufacturers on energy efficiency issues. Purdue's Technical Assistance Program (TAP) will continue to use its Industries of the Future grant to provide support to Indiana's 100(+) largest energy users.
OED also works with the Indiana Clean Manufacturing Technology & Safe Materials Institute (CMTI). The Indiana Clean Manufacturing Technology & Safe Materials Institute (CMTI) is a state-supported institute established and operated at Purdue University within the School of Civil Engineering. CMTI was created by the Indiana General Assembly in 1990, funds were appropriated for its operation in 1993, and it formally began operations on January 1, 1994.
The institute is staffed by three process engineers, an administrator and three technical and administrative support personnel. The purpose of the Institute is to act as the state's focal point for coordinating and deploying technical assistance, outreach, education, planning services and research to facilitate the adoption of pollution prevention/clean manufacturing strategies by Indiana manufacturing facilities.
