Charles Cist was born April 24, 1793, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Charles and Mary (Weiss) Cist. He fought in the War of 1812, after which he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1827 or 1828, Cist moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he became a newspaper editor. He married Janet White in 1817, and together they had thirteen children. Cist died September 8, 1868.

This collection consists of a letter from Cist to Tal P. Shaffner concerning historical research being conducted by Shaffner.
