Finding Aid by: Nikki Stoddard Schofield, May 2013
Irene Johnston was born April 24, 1901 in Forest, Indiana, near Kokomo. She came to Indianapolis in 1925 and worked at Indiana Bell. After a short time at the telephone company, Irene went to work at Wassons where she was top saleslady for hosiery. From Wassons, she went to Rink’s Department Store, then to Strauss’s, and then to Pettit’s Dry Goods Company, known as the New York Store. During the Depression, in 1929 or 1930, Pettit’s closed. For the next five years, Irene worked at Hook Drug Store in Irvington. Her future husband, Mr. Johnson, was the manager of the store at Ritter and Washington. When their daughter went to high school, in 1949, Irene took a job at Stewart’s Stationery Store. She worked there as manager until 1978.
