Elisha Chamberlain was born April 18 or 19, 1827, in Indiana, to Asahel and Sarah (Elliott) Chamberlain. He married Rachel J. Reed on June 22, 1848, and they had six children. Chamberlain lived in Washington County, Indiana, his entire life, working as a farmer. On July 9, 1863, he enlisted in the Union Army, Company C, Indiana 112th Infantry and was given the rank of corporal. Chamberlain died March 31, 1888.

Scope and Content:
The collection consists of Photostats of letters written by Chamberlain while in the army during the Civil War, while he was stationed in Arkansas. One of the letters is addressed to an Augustine Elliott and another is to a J. S. Ruberson.
