Biographical Note:

James O. Leas was born in 1816 to George (1776-1861) and Mary Polly Weems (1776-1859) in Columbiana County, Ohio.  At the age of 45, James enlisted on September 19, 1862, in Company I, 113th Ohio Infantry Regiment. The 1870 federal census for Peru Ward 4, Miami County, Indiana, lists James O. Leas, age 53; Caroline M., age 41; Ella A. [Augusta], age 27; George W., age 18; Alice C., age 14; and Lenora S., age 11. James is buried in East Palestine, Columbiana County, Ohio. His grave marker has the years 1816-1898.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of two letters written from Eaten to “My Dear Children.” The letters, dated January 30, 1864 and March 27, 1865, discuss family news and health.

The letters reference Ella, Call Vandoren, Al Hubbard, Mitchell Walters, Kate Staggs, Aunt Elize, Hope Redman, Margaret Bruce, and George.
