Biographical Note or Organizational History:

James Gilliland (or Gilleland) was born in 1781 and his brother John was born in 1789. They moved from Pennsylvania to Fayette County, Indiana in 1822. The Gilleland bought several tracts of land and appeared to be active in the community. James died in 1854 and John died in 1876. Both are buried in the Christian Church cemetery in Bentonville, Fayette County, Indiana.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of two items, the first a letter addressed to Mr. James Gilliland, dated November 10, 1823 from Mr. Kirkpatrick. The other item, dated October 14, 1825, is a deed record.
