Biographical Note:

James Clarence Godfroy was a fifth generation Native American, descended from the Miami Indians. His great grandfather, Chief Francis Godfroy was the last War Chief of the tribe. Godfroy was born in Wabash County on October 4, 1880. In 1938, James Clarence was given the title Miami Indian Chief. His native name was Ka-pah-po-wah, which Godfroy claimed meant “Big Mountain or Looking Over a Mountain.” He married Elizabeth Mary Clarke in January 1919 in Miami County. He died on October 6, 1962.

This collection consists of “The Battle of the Mississinewa Story” that had been handed down by the Native Americans and told by James Clarence Godfroy from Wabash County, Indiana.
