Biographical Note:

Timothy H. Ball was born on 16 February 1826 in Massachusetts. He grew up in a relatively affluent family, his father being a lawyer and his family having, according to Ball, a strong pedigree. He spent time as a child in Massachusetts, Georgia, and Indiana. He finally settled in Crown Point in Lake County, Indiana where he remained for the rest of his life. He earned a Bachelor’s degree at Franklin College in 1850 and attended Newton Theological Institution near Boston, graduating in 1863. Ball is recognized as the essential historian of Lake County. In addition to his scholarship on history, Ball also served as a Baptist minister in Crown Point and surrounding areas. He published thirteen books and six pamphlets containing history, poetry, genealogy and theology; he also published maps, one of which is contained in this collection.  T.H. Ball died 20 November 1913 at the age of eighty-eight.
