Scope and Content:
The collection consists of eight certificates from the office of Oliver P. Morton, Governor and Commander in Chief of the Indiana Militia, appointing men as officers in independent companies, such as Bracken Rangers (Cavalry). The new officers were: John L. Dennis, James R. Bracken, Hugh Delzell, William H. Sherfy; John Gount, James McCurdy, and Josiah Forth. Additionally, there are ten blank copies of “Morning Report of Capt. of Indiana Volunteers.” None is filled in, and all copies are in a small envelope.
Other papers include draft agreement, dated February 14, 1865, General Order No. 16, dated Aug. 13, 1864, Unest B. Plain’s discharge from military service is dated February 10, 1866, and telegram dated January 12, 1910 to William Hammond in Irvington, Indiana, that announces the death of Unest Plain. The telegram was sent by George W. Steele. “Soldiers Home” is written in pencil following the name of Mr. Steele.
