Biographical Note:

Helen Brown Wiegman was born May 18, 1906 in a suburb of Chicago. The daughter of William R. and Lou Carpenter Brown, Helen’s siblings include Hugh C., William R. Jr., and Mary Brown (Mrs. Paul Shick). Wiegman moved to Indianapolis in 1912 and then to Irvington in1913. She graduated from school #57 in 1920, Arsenal Tech High in 1924 and Madame Blake’s Normal School in 1926. She married in 1926 had two children and divorced in 1933. Wiegman attended Butler University and Indiana University Purdue University - Indianapolis, received a BS in Education from Butler in 1946, and completed her masters in social work at UC Berkley in 1951.

Wiegman started in the field of social work at the Department of Public Welfare in Indianapolis, later moving to the YWCA, Industrial Counseling Child Guidance Clinic, working overseas with the American Red Cross and finishing her career in Indianapolis. She retired as Admissions Superintendent at the Central State Hospital in 1974. Helen Wiegman died August 21, 1990.

Scope and Content:

In an interview recorded on September 11, 1979, Ms. Wiegman talks about her early life in Chicago and subsequent move to Indianapolis. She shares stories about growing up in Irvington in the early part of the twentieth century including living through WWI, the building of the Hawthorne rail yard, fire at the Children’s Guardian home, belonging to the first Girl Scout troop of Indianapolis, and her mother’s involvement in the Irvington Women’s Temperance Christian Union. She mentions various theaters she attended, streetcars, and the interurban and the presence of Butler in Irvington.

Wiegman also discusses how and why she started in the field of social work and how her childhood influenced her continuation in the field.
