Harry D. Hartley, born in Indiana in 1882, served as the president of Pioneer Coal and Shaft Company, as well as president of the Piqua Savings Bank in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. Upon moving to Indianapolis, Hartley served as president of the Turner Glass Company (ca. 1926 – 1930). Hartley worked as a business consultant, while handling his family’s investments. During World War II, Hartley served on the War Rationing Board in Indianapolis. Hartley was married to Alta Reeves Hartley. Harry Hartley died in 1959.

Scope and Content Note:
The collection includes Hartley’s correspondence and papers regarding his family’s property (1925 – 1940), particularly property in Kokomo, Howard County, which was leased for an A & P grocery store in 1930. Also included is correspondence pertaining to his proposed book on the contributions of Hoosiers to the development of the United States and western civilization (1939 – 1951), and letters relating to an Indianapolis talk given by Arthur E. Morgan on his investigations into the Tennessee Valley Authority (1939). Also included are transcripts of the meetings of the Forward Club, organized by Hartley (1928, 1938) and master’s thesis written at Purdue University (1903).
Additionally, the collection contains scrapbook of clippings, pictures, and letters on the Reeves Pulley Company of Columbus, Bartholomew County, which manufactured automobiles in the early twentieth century.
Correspondents include Carl Fisher, Robert Forgan, Philip M. Hauser, Arthur E. Morgan, Frederick Von Nuys, and Herman B. Wells.
