Biographical Note:


Elijah Edwards was born January 26, 1831 in Delaware, Ohio. During his childhood, Elijah and his family moved to Rossville, Clinton County, Indiana. Edwards received his A.B. in 1853 from Indiana Asbury University (now DePauw University). In 1854, Elijah married Mrs. Alice Eddy. During the Civil War, Edwards was Chaplain of the 7th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. Following the war, Elijah received an Honorary Ph.D from Indiana Asbury University in 1877. In 1879, Edwards became the first president of Colorado State Agricultural College (now Colorado State University), and served in that position until 1882. In 1896, his wife Alice died. Three years later, he married Mrs. Ellen Tingley, though the marriage did not last long. Elijah Evan Edwards died November 10, 1915 in LaBelle, Florida. 

Scope and Content Note:

The collection consists of the journal of Elijah Evan Edwards while a student at Indiana Asbury University (now DePauw University) at Greencastle, Indiana. Within the journal, Edwards describes life as a student and the cost, societies, and activities while there.
