Biographical Note:

The Allen family came to Morgan County, IN from North Carolina about 1825, and settled near Gasburg.  There is evidence that the family may have been Quakers, but many of their children may have converted the Methodism.  George Allen was born in 1836 in Morgan County, IN.  He was the oldest child of fifteen born to Charles Allen and his second wife, Sarah Jones.  Allen had three older half-sisters.  He married Mary Weesner and together their family moved from Indiana to Kansas around 1869 but the decided to return to Indiana around 1870.  George Allen died in Indiana in 1895.

Allen’s brother Asa Allen, spent some years working in Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, until finally deciding to settle in Orange County, California around 1886.  He remained there until his death in 1914.

Allen’s brothers Alfred and William moved to Kansas from Indiana and stayed.  Harvey Allen also moved to Kansas, but returned to Indiana and lived near Mooresville until his death in the 1930s.  His brother Enos Allen was a Civil War veteran, who remained in Monrovia, IN.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains the papers (copy) of George Allen.  The bulk of the collection is made up of correspondence between George Allen and his family, from 1856-1870, while the Allen family moved to Iowa, Missouri and Kansas.  There is also an account book, 1866-1889, kept by George Allen for a general store.  The collection also contains a cash book, also kept by Allen, in which he records all cash received and paid out.  It is dated throughout the book and also has page numbers.  As pages are not dated consecutively, the cash book has been arranged by page numbers.
