Harry E. Dynes (1884-1968) was an executive with the Equitable Life Assurance Society of America, Indianapolis; Republican member, Indiana House of Representatives (1917); secretary, Indiana Selective Service Association (1921); Conciliator for the U.S. Labor Department in the 1920s and 1930s.
K.C. Adams (d. 1956) served as an official with the United Mine Workers of American until 1948, including service as publicity director for the UMW, based in Indianapolis (1913-1918), and editor of the United Mine Works Journal until 1948.
Scope and Content Note:
The bulk of the collection consists of Adam’s correspondence during the period 1916-17 when he was working as publicity director of the United Mine Workers in Indianapolis. The correspondence includes both letters received and sent by Adams and regard organizing activities of the UMW; strikes and other labor conflicts in coalfields in Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and other places; the role of the UMW in the 1916 presidential election; the involvement of the UMW with the American Committee on War Finance and other groups regarding labor’s role in World War I; and correspondence with the Committee on Industrial Relations, the National Labor Defense Council, and other pro-labor groups. The collection also includes a Dynes family scrapbook, primarily of Indianapolis Republican Party programs, election tickets, ribbons, broadsides and other campaign material (1873-1923); papers relating to the Indiana Selective Service Association (1918-1921); correspondence regarding the visit of David Lloyd-George to Indianapolis (1923); letters to Dynes from World War II soldiers (1942); and a collection of Indianapolis clippings and cards, including newspaper stories regarding a 1927 Indianapolis trolley-truck accident (1924-1945).
Correspondents include: Dante Barton, Samuel W. Gompers, William P. Harvey, Edward Keating, John L. Lewis, Frank Morrison, Phillip Murray, Scott Nearing, Paul Paulsen, Amos Pinchot, George P. West, John P. White, and Thomas J. White.
