Biographical Note:
Kresge was born in Scranton, PA in 1885(?). Kresge managed the S.S. Kresge store in Indianapolis from 1904 – 1916, and again from 1924 – 1957. Kresge also was the treasurer at J.D. Williams Co. in Scranton, PA from 1916 – 1924, and managed the Fond du Lac store in Indianapolis from 1920 – 1924. Kresge was twice married, first to Myrtle Kresge who died in 1914, and remarried in 1916 to Miss Ethel Maris. Floyd Kresge is the cousin of Sebastian S. Kresge, who was the founder/president of S.S. Kresge variety and novelty store chain. Floyd Kresge died in 1957 at the age of 72. He had no children.
Scope and Content Note:
The collection consists of Kresge’s business and personal correspondence from 1903 – 1924. Kresge’s correspondences involve Kresge company officials in Detroit regarding the operation of his stores in Indianapolis, as well as his Fond du Lac store. Also include were correspondences with other store managers, financial and business reports, and family correspondence, particularly with his brother Thomas who operated a dairy farm in Ransom, PA (1912 -1957).
