Teachingbooks.net Resources Can Transform Your Reading Programs

Join Teachingbooks.net founder Nick Glass for one or more free sessions that illustrate how TeachingBooks.net can transform your reading and literacy work. Each session is brief (10-minutes) and focuses on a specific topic. Attendees have the option of actively attending a live webinar or reviewing an archived session. Past and future topics include:

• Common Core Instructional Support
• Middle and High School Literacy Support
• LibGuides, Blackboard, and Online Resources
• Expanding Curriculum Maps and Reading Lists
  
• Mentor Texts and Mentor Author

Leave these sessions with easily actionable take-aways that you can begin implementing in your school immediately. For example, you can learn how to align TeachingBooks' entire database of multimedia resources with the specific books read in your schools, and with the instructional shifts of Common Core. Please note that due to the brevity of these sessions that they are not eligible for LEUs.

TeachingBooks.net is an easy-to-use website that adds a multimedia dimension to the reading experiences of children's and young adult books. The online database includes thousands of resources about fiction and nonfiction books used in the K–12 environment. TeachingBooks.net offers many more helpful videos, promotional resources and tips for integrating these great resources.

Please remember, if you're a first-time user, logging on to Teachingbooks.net can be tricky as going directly to the homepage will not give you access to content licensed through INSPIRE. Click here or connect through the INSPIRE list of databases for authentication and complete access to all licensed resources.

TBBL Offers Summer Reading for Youths with Visual Impairments

Please encourage a summer reader with a visual impairment the prevents them from reading standard print to join the Indiana Talking Book and Braille Library (TBBL) for its annual summer reading program.  Books are available to borrow from the TBBL in Braille, large print, and digital audio formats. Participants can also download digital audio books from the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service.

All participants will receive a prize, but the more they read the more prizes they will receive.  Participants can read anything they want and extra prizes will be awarded for books read from the theme-based reading lists. 

Please complete and return the application by Wednesday, May 29th. If the application is a bit late, the student is still eligible to be a summer reader. NAFCPL Wins 2013 Teen Video Challenge

The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) recently announced that the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library is the winner of this year's CSLP Teen Video Challenge for Indiana Teen Video Challenge.  The Teen Video Challenge is a national competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library's summer reading program. 

This video competition is in its third year of encouraging teens to get involved with promoting summer reading and public libraries with a focus on the CSLP 2013 slogan, “Beneath the Surface.”  Each participating state selected one winning video to be named the official CSLP Teen Video Challenge state winner for 2013. Twenty-six states and over one hundred teens participated in the creation of these winning videos.

To view this year’s winning videos, please visit CSLP’s website.  The winning videos can be used by all teens and all public libraries to promote summer reading nationwide. For their hard work and creativity, the winning teens will receive a monetary award of $275 and the associated public library will receive prizes worth $125 from CSLP and Upstart.

Apply Now for the 2013 Library Leadership Academy

The Indiana State Library and its Professional Development Committee are now accepting applications for the 2013 Indiana Librarian Leadership Academy. The Professional Development Committee established the Academy to prepare emerging library leaders for 21st-Century challenges. Library leaders of all backgrounds, with all kinds of experience, and in all types of libraries are encouraged to apply for the 2nd-annual program.

Be on the Lookout for Certification Renewal Letters

Grandfathered staff will be receiving letters over the next week with details on renewing their licenses. Letters will be sent to the address where individuals’ licenses were received in 2008. The letters contain very important information on how and when to renew, as well as details on LEUs and random audits.
