Biographical:
Lieutenant Colonel Goodwin worked overseas during World War II. He was not always a Lt. Col. during his service in Europe though, he was first a Major in the U.S. Military, and while serving in England he received a promotion. He was part of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) team that worked in England, France, Belgium and Germany during the war. Goodwin had ties to both the Third and the Fifteenth U.S. Army units during WWII. Although not much is known of Lieutenant Colonel Goodwin, his photographs tell the story of the before and after of the war as it affected England, as well as the aftermath in France, Belgium and Germany.
Scope and Content Note:
This collection contains photographs taken by a military officer, Lieutenant Colonel Goodwin during his time overseas in WWII. Some of the photographs resemble those that would be taken by a person on a sightseeing trip, including pictures of London and Paris. However, most of the photos give a good view of what World War II did to England and the European Continent. There are some before and after bombing photos of England. Also included are pictures of some of the men that Goodwin served with during his work in the military. Photographs of Germany include those of and from Hitler's house at Berchtesgaden and the SS Headquarters that were near there.
This collection covers the time period from August 1943 until July 1945. The photographs start out in England, then move on to France. There are a few select pictures taken of Belgium and some of Germany as well.
