Biographical Note:
Raymond Eugene Willis was born in Waterloo, Indiana on August 11, 1875. He attended Waterloo Public Schools and graduated from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana in 1896. He became a printer in 1898 and worked for various papers in Angola, Indiana. He was the Steuben County Republican central committee secretary in 1908; he served as the Angola postmaster, 1910-1914; and served as the Indiana Republican Editorial Association president until going into the Indiana House of Representatives in 1919. He was a Republican national convention delegate, 1940-1952. He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1938 but was elected in 1941 and served until 1947. He then returned to the publishing business as president of the Steuben Printing Company and became the trustee of Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana. Willis died in Angola, March 21, 1956 and is interred at Circle Hill Cemetery.

Scope and Content Note:
This collection contains mainly original correspondences of Raymond E. Willis including his campaigns for Senator in 1938, 1940, and 1946 and his years as a Senator. It contains mostly political correspondences dealing with the Republican party and Indiana politics. Also included here are Willis’s voting records from 1941-1944 and a scrapbook compiled about his 1940 opponent Senator Sherman Minton. The materials are in chronological order.
