Biographical Note:
John E. Smith was born circa 1844 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. He enlisted in the 16th Indiana Infantry, Company D as a private in 1862. Smith was wounded in a battle on January 11, 1863 in Arkansas. He died in Memphis, Tennessee on February 5, 1863 as a result of his injuries.
