Biographical Note:

William L. Shugart of Grant County was born in Indiana to Henry and Nancy Shugart circa 1841. He was in the Union Army in the Civil War initially in the 12th Indiana Regiment and later as a Sergeant in the 1st Cavalry (28th Indiana Regiment). He was later promoted to First Lieutenant in Company L, and then to Captain in Company A of the 1st Cavalry. He married Mary Russell (born circa 1842) of Jonesboro, Grant County, Indiana in the fall of 1862. After he left the military he became a farmer near Helena, Arkansas where he died shortly after the war.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection consists of photocopies of letters written by William L. Shugart to Mary Russell Shugart before and after their marriage. Letters are largely from Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Virginia, and Arkansas and largely contain personal information as well as comments on Army life and activities.

The letters are arranged chronologically.
