Biographical Note:
Paul Vories McNutt was born on July 19,
1891, in Franklin, Indiana. His parents were John C. and Ruth Neely McNutt. The
family moved to Martinsville, Indiana, in 1899. He graduated from Indiana
University in 1913 and Harvard University Law School in 1916. He then returned
to Martinsville to practice law with his father. In the fall of 1917, McNutt
accepted an assistant professorship at the Indiana University Law School. McNutt
served as an officer in World War I and resumed his post at the Indiana
University Law School upon his return in 1919. In 1925, he was appointed dean of
the school and held the post until his inauguration as Governor of Indiana in
1933.
McNutt was elected Governor of Indiana on the Democratic ticket in November
1932. He also served as High Commissioner to the Philippines (1937-1939);
administrator of the Farm Security Administration (1939-1945); chairman of the
War Manpower Commission (1942-1945); and first U.S. ambassador to the Philippine
Republic (1946-1947). In 1940, he ran for the Democratic nomination for
President of the United States, but was defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Following his term as a U.S. ambassador, McNutt retired from public service and
practiced law in New York, Washington, D.C., and Manila. He died on March 24,
1955.

The collection consists of a letter from Governor McNutt in response to an autograph request; a press release issuing McNutt’s statement on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s nomination for reelection; a letter from the President of Paul V. McNutt for President to the Director of the Indiana State Library regarding McNutt’s feelings on Roosevelt’s nomination; and the thesis of Larry Purvis on Paul V. McNutt’s 1940 presidential campaign.
