Biographical Note:
Colonel John Dudley Long was born in Indiana in 1876. He served in the U.S. Cavalry, from which he gained his title. He never married and had no heirs, but did have several nieces and nephews. Long was interested in genealogy and spent roughly the last 40 years of his life working on tracing his direct ancestral line. Due to his descent from the wealthier classes in Ireland and Wales, Long was able to trace back his heritage quite far. Some of the sources he worked with stated his probable line went all the way back to Adam and Eve, however, he did not seem so convinced of this when considering his work with ancestral charts. Long, therefore, tended to claim his earliest descent from the 5th Century A.D., however, most of Long’s lineage is traced back only to the 17th and 18th Century. Many of his ancestral claims are well documented because of well-kept records from groups such as the Sureties of the Magna Charta, the First Families of Virginia and the Sons of the Revolution. Unfortunately, Long’s research ended with his death in the 1960s in Maryland.
Scope and Content Note:
The Colonel John Dudley Long collection consists of many different types of documents. The collection consists mainly of information collected by Col. Long in his quest to piece together his family heritage. With this information he was able to create an extensive assortment of ancestral charts. Some of these charts are small, but many of them are relatively large. Within the collection, there is also correspondence between the creator, Long, and those from whom he wished to gain his familial information, be they family, or professionals such as librarians or archivists. There are professional letters between Long and the genealogical and professional societies to which he belonged as well.
The dates of the Long collection are fairly broad. The ancestral charts and written lines of descent by far cover the largest array of dates, from roughly the 5th Century (400 A.D.) all the way up through the 19th and into the early 20th Century. The correspondence ranges from the mid to late 1920s until the early 1960s. Through his research, Long identified many surnames to which he was a descendent. There are too many surnames to identify them all here, but a few of the most prominent in the collection are Bowen, Minshull, Parker, Redman, Smallwood, Stewart, Sudler, Tull, Wood and Wynne. Many of these families came from the British Isles and immigrated to Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and eventually to Indiana.
This collection was originally held in the Genealogy section of the Indiana State Library. The original collection guide was based upon the numbers that appeared at the top of each of the original folders. Therefore, the new inventory has been arranged similarly. The numbers indicated after the name are those that originally appeared in the files in Genealogy, i.e. Handy #41. Most of the original folders had to be divided into more than one folder in this Manuscript collection and therefore a secondary numeral has been used to indicate the correct order as it was originally filed, i.e. folder #41 has become folder #41-1, and #41-2.
