Organizational History:
The Indiana Artists Club was originally organized as the Indiana Art Club on January 23, 1917, in Indianapolis. The name was changed a few months later to better represent the Club as an organization of professional artists. The mission of the organization was to advance the artistic interests of its membership and of this community by all appropriate means. It was also affiliated with the American Federation of Art Clubs. Early members included T. C. Steele, William Forsyth, and Wayman Adams. Otto Stark was the organization’s first president. In 1921, the Club did not elect a president but did have a Board of Directors chaired by Frederick Polley. The Club resumed the practice of having a president the following year. On September 24, 1947, the Club was incorporated as a non-profit organization. Since its inception, the Club has held annual exhibits of members’ work. The exhibitions were in various places until 1935 when the L. S. Ayres Auditorium became their home for many years. The Indiana Artists’ Club still exists today and continues to hold annual exhibitions at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

The collection contains various publications of the Indiana Artists Club, primarily programs from its annual exhibitions. There are also calendars of events and a brief history of the Club.
