Biographical Note / Organizational History:

Hilda Meimberg was born on August 7, 1899 in Indianapolis, IN, the second child of Frederick and Anna (Bickel) Meimberg.  Meimberg was employed by the Citizens Gas and Coke Utility for 30 years as an office worker.  She retired in 1962.  Meimberg died January 23, 1976.

Citizen’s Gas and Coke Utility was created in 1888 as the Consumers Gas Trust Company.  Unhappy with current utility options, members of the community decided to form their own utility as a charitable public trust.  The company was quite successful until 1902 when their gas supplies were depleted.  The company applied to be reorganized as an artificial gar producer.  They eventually won their court battle and reorganized in 1906 under the name Citizens Gas Company.  In 1909, the company built a new facility on Prospect Street in Indianapolis.  Four years later, in 1913, the company merged with the Indianapolis Gas Company.  It was renamed the Citizens Gas and Coke Utility in 1935 after the company came under the control of municipal trustees.  The company moved to its North Meridian location in 1956.   

 Scope and Content Note:

 This scrapbook was created by Hilda Meimberg, an employee of the Citizen’s Gas and Coke Utility Company.  In it, she documents her time as an employee.  This scrapbook contains photographs of Citizen’s Gas employees and buildings.  Also included are informational booklets about the company’s history and philosophy.  This collection contains several programs from the annual Quarter Century Club dinners as well as a few copies of the company newsletter, “The Gas Flame.”  There are two letters in this collection to Hilda Meimberg from Thomas L. Kemp and the Miller family.  The scrapbook also contains poetry written by Hilda Meimberg, a Christmas letter to company employees, magazine clippings and a table of bowling tournament teams.
