Biographical Note:
George S. Cottman was a printer in Irvington, Marion County, Indiana. He was the founder and publisher of “Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, the author of numerous articles and pamphlets on Indiana History and nature study, and the author of “A Centennial History and Handbook of Indiana.
Scope and Content Note:
The collection contains Cottman’s correspondence from other Indiana and Midwestern writers about his work and the “Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History.” Also included is his research on Indiana History, letters regarding the Western Association of Writers, drafts of speeches and articles and his work on the history of newspapers in Indiana. Also included is the work of Cottman’s father John Cottman, regarding the 19th Indiana Regiment during the Civil War and his farm near Beach Grove, Indiana.
