Organizational History:
The Hoosiers Historical Institutes were offered for college credit through the extension division of the Indiana State Teachers College, now Indiana State University. These institutes were sponsored by Indiana University, Purdue University, Ball State Teachers College, Indiana State Department of Education, Indiana Department of Commerce and Public Relations and the Indiana Historical Bureau.
Dr. Ross F. Lockridge was the director of the program and the instructor for first few Instititues. Due to failing health, he was unable to continue. Helen Augspurger was class secretary of the first institute, attended most of the other and was coordinator for the program in Fort Wayne. J. William Ball was at one time President of the Cass County Historical Society.
Scope and Content Note:
This collection contains item related to the Hoosier Historical Institutes from 1848-1950. Included in this collection is correspondence, particularly between Helen Augspurger and Ross F. Lockridge, Sr., programs schedules, and class records from some of the institutes. Other correspondence is between Miss Augspurger and J. William Ball of Logansport concerning the institutes and their historical meetings in the state.
