Biographical Note:

 Lyman Abbott was born December 18, 1835 in Roxbury, Massachusetts, the son of Jacob and Harriet (Vaughan) Abbott.  In the early years of his life, Abbott worked as a lawyer.  He decided to make a career change and was ordained in 1860.  His first position as a pastor was at the Terre Haute Congregational Church, where he worked until 1865.  Abbott then moved to the East Coast, where he continued his work as a pastor in several churches until 1899.  During his life, Abbott also worked as an editor for the Literary Record of Harper’s Magazine and the Illustrated Christian Weekly.  He was also the author of several books and articles, including The Spirit of Democracy, American in the Making and A Study in Human Nature.

 Lyman Abbott was married to Abby Frances Hamlin on October 14, 1857.  Together they had six children.  Abbott died in Cornwall on Hudson, New York on October 22, 1922.
