From Settlement to Sesquicentennial
Alvin Peterson Hovey
6 Sept. 1821 - 23 Nov. 1891
Alvin P. Hovey
was born near Mount Vernon, Posey County, Indiana. He fought in the Mexican War
and the Civil War and was a delegate to Indiana's 1850 Constitutional
Convention. Following the Civil War, he was U.S. Minister to Peru, a U.S.
Representative, and Governor of Indiana. Most of Hovey's published works are
speeches of a political in nature, but he also wrote a history of his
birthplace, Posey County.

George Washington Julian
5 May 1817 - 7 July 1899
George Washington Julian was born near Centerville, Indiana. He practiced law in Greenfield, Indiana, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1849 to 1851. Throughout his life, Julian was an active advocate of social reform including the antislavery, temperance, labor, and women’s suffrage movements. He also wrote and published several books including his Political Recollections, Life of Joshua R. Giddings, and two collections of his speeches.

John Law
28 Oct. 1796 - 7 Oct. 1873
John Law was born in New London, Connecticut. He settled in Vincennes, Indiana, where he began practicing law in 1817. He held several political offices and was judge of the seventh judicial circuit and the Court of Land Claims. In 1850, he moved to Evansville, Indiana. He wrote short histories that he presented as speeches before various groups.
