The 2012 What INSPIRE's You? Essay Contest is now closed. Thank you to the many Indiana students who entered. Stay tuned to this webpage for results of the 2012 contest and the announcement of the timeline and guidelines for the 2013 contest.

About The Contest

Tell us who or what inspires you?  INSPIRE, Indiana’s Virtual Library, was created to connect you to reliable information for everything that INSPIREs you! Search through images, newspapers, biographies and more, all conveniently located at inspire.IN.gov. INSPIRE is committed to helping you achieve your academic goals inside and outside of the classroom.

General Rules

1.) The contest is divided into three grade levels: 3-6; 7-9; and 10-12.
2.) Students enrolled in grades 3-12 in the applicable school year are eligible to enter.
3.) Contestants must be Indiana residents.
4.) Essay Length:
 Grades 3-6: up to 300 words
 Grades 7-9: 400 – 600 words
 Grades 10-12: 600 – 800 words
5.) Participants are only eligible to enter one essay in the contest.
6.) Entries must be postmarked by TBD.
7.) Finalists will be invited to the Indiana Student Literary Awards at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis.

Essay Guidelines

1.) All essays must be accompanied by an entry form.
2.) Essays may be handwritten or typed in 12 point font, double-spaced.
3.) Students must cite at least one INSPIRE source used at the bottom of their essay. Part of the judging will reflect how well student used INSPIRE.
4.) The Indiana State Library has the right to publish or reproduce any essays entered in the contest along with the author’s name and hometown.  Winning essays will be published upon the finality of the contest.

Contest Prizes

  • All participants will receive a bookmark and certificate for submitting an essay.

  • 1st place essays in each level will receive a $100 Target GiftCard; essay featured on INSPIRE website and in Literary Awards Calendar; and recognition at the annual Indiana Student Literary Awards.

  • Honorable Mention essays will receive a $20 Target GiftCard; essay featured on INSPIRE website; student recognized at the annual Indiana Student Literary Awards
