IN Touch Summer Reading Results "Get a Clue @ Your Library," was the theme for our 2007 statewide summer reading program for children and teens. During the eight-week period from June 5-August 4, 102 students in grades K-12 read a total of 893 titles: 600 cassettes, 105 large print, and 188 braille. Everyone received a bookmark, a sticker, and a Wendy's food coupon. Puzzles, games, book bags, erasers, magnifiers, and spy glasses were among the prizes earned by participants who read and returned more than three books. The outstanding reader in each grade level, the top braille and large print readers, and two grand prize winners won T-shirts and canvas totes. Winners were: Kindergarten: Alayna Hall Eighty-two students in grades K-7 registered for the program. Enquiries from some former summer readers prompted us to introduce a program for teens. Twenty teens participated this summer and we plan to expand the program in 2008. A special thanks to those parents and teachers who support our efforts to encourage children to use their library. Plans are already underway for the 2008 summer program. Young Hoosier Books An increasing number of young talking book patrons are attending schools which participate in the Young Hoosier Book Awards program. Each year, students in grades K-8 read from a list of titles selected by teachers and media specialists. Students vote for their favorite titles, and the top vote-getters are added to the growing list of Young Hoosier Book Award winners. The following Young Hoosier Book Award nominees for 2007-2008 are available on cassette, in braille, or in large print: Grades K-3 RC 53369 BR 13875-You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Stories Grades 4-6 RC 58518 LP 15038-Bernie Magruder and the Bats in the Belfrey Grades 6-8 RC 61390 BR 16186-Each Little Bird that Sings A number of past Young Hoosier Book nominees and award winners are available in braille, large print, or on cassette. These titles represent some of the best of children's literature; many of them can be found on recommended reading lists. Contact the Talking Book and Braille Library for further information. Student Profile Ten-year-old Haley Sumner has been a patron of the Indiana Talking Book and Braille Library for five years. She is an avid reader and has earned outstanding awards during three of our annual children's summer reading programs. Haley, a fifth-grader at Robey Elementary School in Indianapolis, is an excellent student who participates in numerous school-related activities and in programs sponsored by her local public library. She also enjoys swimming, bicycling, and painting. In June 2007, Haley traveled to the Braille Institute in Los Angeles, to participate in the Braille Challenge, the only national academic competition for students who use braille. Haley was the only student to qualify. The Braille Challenge tests a student's ability to decipher the braille code. Participants must transcribe and read braille in a series of sessions that test speed, accuracy, comprehension, and the ability to decode charts and graphs in braille. Sixty elementary, middle, and high school students from the United States and Canada took part in the competition. Although Haley did not win a trophy, she did receive a star. Best of all, she met lots of great kids, had a great time, and learned much from participating in a national event. She plans to compete next year. Letters About Literature The Indiana Center for the Book of the Indiana State Library is coordinating the Indiana portion of Letters About Literature, a national reading-writing competition sponsored by Target stores and the Center for the Book of the Library of Congress. All state semi-finalists and winners will receive recognition during a ceremony at the Indiana State Library in the spring of 2008. They will also receive cash awards and personalized plaques. In addition, the top winner in each level will receive a Target gift card and represent Indiana in the national competition in Washington, D.C. Deadline for entries is Friday, December 14.
