Biographical Note:

John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, was born September 26, 1774, in Leominster, Massachusetts.  He became a legendary figure for traveling throughout the Midwest planting apple trees for the benefit of the settlers and for his eccentric lifestyle.  Chapman died March 11, 1845, near Fort Wayne, Indiana.  At the time of his death, he owned large plots of land in multiple states which he used for growing trees.

Scope and Content:

This collection contains transcripts of documents pertaining to Chapman’s estate and the location of his grave, including probate records and research conducted on the location of Chapman’s grave nearly a century after his death.
