Scope and Content:

There are three photocopied items in this collection, two letters, and a discharge certificate. Both letters were written from Christiana, Tennessee, where the 33rd Indiana Regiment camped from November 5, 1863 until February 1864. On February 25, 1864, 450 veterans received furloughs, and, upon their return, the regiment joined General William T. Sherman’s army.

On January 27, 1864, Harrison wrote to his parents about Col. John Coburn’s “mighty good speech” about the war ending in six months and encouraging veteran volunteering. Harrison wrote there were 58 men, 50 of which went into the veteran corps.

On February 22, 1864, Harrison wrote to his father “This regiment is going to get guns that shoot 17 times & only weigh 4 lbs when loaded. When we are discharged, they are our guns. We will draw them at Indianapolis. We have to pay for them ourselves. They cost 32 dollars. We have 3 pay days to pay for them. Then, if we lose them, we get paid for them.”

The third item in the collection is Harrison’s discharge certificate.
