Louis A. Kiefer of Indianapolis filed for a patent with the United States Patent Office and was granted a certificate on November 4, 1874.
Information Found within Collection
The original certificate, which measures 8 ½ x 14 inches, reads: “This is to certify that Louis A. Kiefer of Indianapolis, Indiana, has this 4th day of November 1874 filed in this office a caveat relating to an improvement in combined loose and fast pulley and the same has been placed in the confidential archives of the Patent Office, as provided by section 40 of the Patent Act. This caveat will cease to be operative and will be removed from the confidential archives after one year from date, unless the same shall be renewed. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto caused the seal of the Patent Office to be hereunto affixed this seventh day of November 1874, and of the Independence of the United States the ninety ninth.” It was signed by the Commissioner of Patents and had a red seal.
