Biographical Note:

Bill W. Boyer Sr. was born on January 24, 1919. He attended Shortridge High School for two years and then went to work for the New York Central Railroad. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp on November 2,1942. Boyer married Betty Mildred Zike, born in Ohio in 1924, daughter of William and Mildred Zike. The Boyer’s had four children, Bill Boyer Jr., Joyce, Brenda, and Barbara. Boyer died in Indianapolis on April 5, 1995.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains a transcript of an oral history tape made with Jill Baniewicz on April 12, 1990. Boyer tells about hearing that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor and his entry into the Air Corp. He was a radio operator and a gunner and was wounded when the airplane he was in was shot down over Germany. Boyer discusses the air fight and the plane crash. He talks about how German civilians and military treated him and life as a POW.
