Biographical Note:

Helen Daniels was born in Tipton, Indiana on February 28, 1907, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Staats) Daniels. Her father, a lawyer, died in 1920, at the age of 41, of diabetes. Daniels attended St. John’s parochial school, and graduated from Tipton High School in 1924 and then attended Tipton Business College. She moved to Indianapolis in the 1920s. Her first job was working at the Indianapolis Union Railway and then she worked at the State House, for the Public Service Commission. Between 1937 and 1939, Daniels attended Indiana University Extension (later IUPUI), taking classes in social work. As a social worker, she worked on “better admission of poor relief funds, stricter child abuse laws, and a separate health and hospital corporation for Marion County.” She became a lobbyist, working on welfare issue with the Indiana Legislature. Helen Daniels died On 2 April 1995 in Indianapolis.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of an oral history interview with F. Gerald (Jerry) Handfield, which takes place over four different interview sessions between March 15, 1977 and September 14, 1978. Part one consists of information about Daniels’ childhood and young adult life in Tipton. The second part she talks about her early jobs in social work in Indianapolis. The third part of the interview she tells about her social service and lobbying activities with regards to public health. The fourth part concludes with her impressions of the legislature, lobbyists, and the economic climate in Indianapolis in the 1970s.
