Scope and Content:

The collection consists of the original 18 x 20 ½” sheet, written on both sides, listing the name of the soldiers in Company C of the 101st Indiana Volunteer Regiment.  The heading states: “Muster-In Roll of Captain Alexander McCrary’s Company, in the 101st Regiment, (___ Brigade,) of Indiana Volunteers, commanded by Colonel _______________ called into the service of the United States by the President of _______________ from the Sixth day of September 1862, (date of this muster,) for the term of three years unless sooner discharged.” Every man, both officers and privates, received the same bounty -- $27.00.

Three lieutenants were enrolled by Governor Morton. The other volunteers, who were enrolled by Lieutenant Turpen, were five sergeants, eight corporals, two musicians, one wagoner, and 77 privates. The volunteers all came from Tipton.

At the bottom of the 2nd page, written in ink, it states: “Each enlisted man under twenty one years of age has the consent of his parent or guardian to enlist & the articles of war required by the regulations has been read to this company.”
