Joseph L. Bayard was born Jan. 21, 1840 in Vincennes, IN, the son of John F. (a soldier of the French Army, under Napoleon) and Mary A. [(Bano) or (Boneau)] Bayard. He was educated in the public and parochial schools of Vincennes and attended St. Joseph’s College [Bardstown College], Bardstown, KY. In 1858 he took a post as clerk under his brother Frank, a cashier of the Vincennes branch of the Bank of the State of Indiana. In 1863 he resigned and engaged in mercantile pursuits for five years, this being the only time he did not work in his profession of banking. He was one of the organizers of a private bank known as the German Banking Company, which became a public bank, in 1871, known as the First National Bank. He became its president in 1889. He was one of the originators of the Citizens Gas Company and its president for some years. He was the treasurer of the Board of Trade and trustee of many organizations. He died in 1926.
