Biographical Note:

Reginald Hall Sullivan was born on March 10, 1876, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His father, Thomas L. Sullivan, was mayor of Indianapolis from 1890 to 1893. His maternal grandfather was Oliver H. Smith. Sullivan graduated from Wabash College in 1896 and received his law degree from the Indiana Law School in 1899. He never married. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, he practiced law and was chairman of the Marion County Democratic Central Committee (1912-1914). He served as a State Senator in 1911 and 1913. From 1916 to 1917, he was City Controller for Indianapolis. Sullivan was elected mayor of Indianapolis and served two non-consecutive terms (1930-1935, 1939-1943). He died January 30, 1980.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection consists of a transcript and tapes of four interviews with Reginald Hall Sullivan conducted by Jerry Handfield. Sullivan was interviewed at Hooverwood Home in Indianapolis, Indiana. Only three of the four interviews were transcribed because some of the tapes were inaudible.

In the transcribed interviews, Sullivan discusses his youth in Indianapolis, baseball, Wabash College, the Ku Klux Klan, and his political experiences. He also comments on other well-known Hoosiers including Otto Ray, James Whitcomb Riley, Paul McNutt, Thomas R. Marshall, Sherman Minton, Tom Taggart, Frank McHale, Mike Morrissey, and Gus Efroymson.
