John R. Simpson, born Sept. 1834, was the son of attorney A.J. Simpson of Paoli, Orange County, and attended Westfield Academy in Massachusetts (1852 – 1855). Simpson worked as a businessman in Paoli, Indiana, Davenport, Iowa, and New York State. Mr. Simpson married his wife Adie in 1875. According to the U.S. census, John and Adie had three children: Arthur, John, and Charles. John R. Simpson died Nov. 25, 1906.
The collection consists primarily of letters to Simpson from family and friends in Paoli while he was a student in Massachusetts (1852 – 1855). Also included are other family letters to Simpson (1851 – 1875), and business papers of the Campbell family of Paoli (1822 – 1850s).
