Biographical Note:

Sherman Minton was born on October 20, 1890, in Georgetown, Floyd County, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University (1915) and Yale University (1916). He married Gertrude Gurtz with whom he had one son, Sherman, Jr. In 1915, he was admitted to the bar and began practicing in New Albany, Indiana. During World War I, he served as a Captain in the Motor Transport Corps (1917-1919). He remained in the Officers’ Reserve Corps after the war (1919-1943). After practicing in New Albany for ten years, Minton moved to Miami, Florida, where he practiced for three years before returning to Indiana. In 1933, he became public counselor of Indiana. Two years later, he was elected to the U.S. Senate and served for three terms (1935-1941). Minton then became judge of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. He remained on the Circuit Court bench until 1949, when Harry S Truman appointed him to the United States Supreme Court. Minton served as an Associate Justice from 1949 to 1956, when he resigned due to poor health. He retired to New Albany, where he died on April 9, 1965.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection contains a speech given by Minton at the presentation ceremonies held at the Floyd County Circuit Court Room in July 1955, which gives the history of the Floyd County courts. There is also a letter written by Minton after his stroke.
