Biographical Note:

William Henry Harrison Miller was born in Augusta, Oneida County, New York, on September 6, 1840. His parents were Curtis and Lucy Duncan Miller. He attended Whitestown Seminary and graduate from Hamilton College in 1861. After serving in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, he studied law under Morrison Waite in Toledo, Ohio, and was admitted to the bar in 1865 in Peru, Indiana. He practiced law in Peru where he also served as county school examiner there. Miller married Gertrude A. Bunce on December 23, 1863.

Miller spent most of his legal career practicing in Fort Wayne, Indiana, (1866-1874), where he was the law partner of William H. Combs, and Indianapolis (1874-1889, 1893-1917). He was the law partner of Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis (1874-1889) and served in the Harrison administration as Attorney General of the United States (1889-1893). Miller died in Indianapolis on May 25, 1917.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection includes indentures, mortgages, abstracts of titles, and other legal documents regarding his property ownership in Indianapolis (1874-1906) as well as correspondence, reports, and financial papers regarding the construction and maintenance of said properties; letters of condolence to his wife and children at his death; several of Miller’s speeches; and a report to the U.S. Circuit Court on the case of James R. Jessup vs. the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway Company (1907). The volumes consist of his ledger book recording his trustee accounts and Miller’s letter books, which contain his correspondence regarding his legal work, his work as U.S. Attorney General, and personal and financial matters.

Correspondents include Albert J. Beveridge, Oscar Bohlen, Mary Lord Harrison, and James E. Watson.
