Biographical Note:
Thomas Andrews Hendricks was born on September 7, 1819, near Zanesville, Ohio, and moved with his family to Madison, Indiana, while still a child. He graduated from Hanover College in 1841 and studied law in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1843. In 1845, he married Eliza C. Morgan with whom he had one child. Hendricks was active in Democratic politics throughout his life. He served as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives during the 1848-1849 session and as a delegate to the Indiana constitutional convention in 1850. He also served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1851-1855) and of the U.S. Senate (1863-1869). Hendricks was elected Governor of Indiana in 1873 and held that office until 1876. He won the Democratic nomination for Vice-President in 1876 and 1884, but he and Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York lost the 1876 election. Hendricks became Vice-President in 1885, but died only nine months after taking office on November 25, 1885.

Scope and Content Note:
The collection consists primarily of Hendricks’ correspondence as well as a few receipts and checks. A speech given by his nephew Thomas at a Thomas A. Hendricks Memorial Celebration at Thomas A. Hendricks School in Shelbyville, Indiana is also included. The oversized portion of the collection consists of resolutions passed by various communities and organizations after Hendricks’ death
Correspondents include William English, Benjamin Harrison, Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York, and Lew Wallace. However, each has only one letter in the collection. The collection is organized chronologically.
