He attended college in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and Transylvania University law school in Lexington, Kentucky (1845). Hendricks moved to Madison, Indiana, in 1838 where he practiced law from 1847 to 1866. He then moved to Indianapolis where he continued to practice law until his death. During the Indianapolis railroad strike of 1877, he was secretary of the Committee of Safety. Hendricks died on November 25, 1887, in Indianapolis.
His son, Allan Hendricks, was born on September 24, 1864, in Madison, Indiana. He practiced law in Indianapolis and was a very active community member, serving on a number of boards. He died on January 4, 1949.
