Biographical Note:

Louis Blasdel Ewbank was born on September 5, 1864, in Guilford, Dearborn County, Indiana. In 1891, he was admitted to the Indiana bar. He practiced in the firm of Hanan, Ewbank, & Hanan in Lagrange, Indiana, (1910-1912) before moving to Indianapolis. Ewbank married Effie Shoemaker on October 17, 1893. He was a member of the Indiana Law School faculty from 1897 to 1914.

In 1914, Ewbank was elected judge of the Marion County Circuit Court. He left the Circuit Court bench in 1920 when Governor Goodrich appointed him to the Indiana Supreme Court bench following the death of Justice Harvey. Ewbank won his own six-year term in the next election and served on the Supreme Court bench until 1927. He then returned to private practice in the firm of Whitcomb, Ewbank, & Dowden. In 1940, he and his brother, Richard L. Ewbank, created their own practice.

Ewbank also authored several legal texts including Manual of Indiana Appellate Practice, Indiana Trial Practice, and Indiana Criminal Law. He was the editor of the Indiana Cumulative Digest from 1904 to 1914. He died on March 6, 1953.
